Una de las cosas que más he apreciado siempre en fotografia fueron el blanco y negro, la originalidad, una mente inquieta y una gran capacidad para transmitir con imágenes sentimientos en gran parte ocultos o desconocidos. Entonces conocí la obra de Heavycoat (Craig Corbin) y me fascinó. Y angel conocio tambien su obra y me pidió que le hiciese una entrevista para Xocolat. Es la primera vez que hago una cosa así y tengo que admitir que he disfrutado mucho, sobre todo por que en muchos aspectos me he sentido muy identificado con Craig. Espero que os guste esta entrevista con un “mago” visual del formato medio.

H74 - Bien, ahí vamos con las clásicas preguntas para este tipo de cosas. Te conocemos como Heavycoat de DA, pero… ¿Quién es realmente el hombre tras el apodo? Ya sabes, tu nombre, dónde vives y cómo te ganas la vida… esa clase de cosas, háblanos un poco sobre ti…

HC - Mi nombre real es Craig Corbin y vivo en un pequeño y olvidado pueblo llamado Lyons, Georgia. Ni siquiera estoy seguro de que esté en el mapa (risas). Durante el día soy entrenador personal (compra la película).

H74 - Heavycoat… echando un vistazo a tus obras parece algo estrechamente relacionado con los ambientes, contrastes y temas en tus fotografías, tu estilo… Estoy seguro de que este nombre también tiene su historia…

HC - Mi estilo es… humm… esto es duro. Trato de evocar algo de mí en todo lo que hago y espero que se perciba. Parte analógico, parte digital, el resto lo dejo a mis emociones. Creo que otros probablemente puedan hablar sobre esto mejor que yo, creo que simplemente ocurre .

H74 - Otra pregunta obvia en este tipo de entrevistas. ¿Cómo y cuando descubriste y te interesaste por la fotografía? ¿Cómo y cuando supiste que querías ser fotógrafo? ¿Autodidacta? ¿Academia?

HC - Mi padre me dio una cámara cuando yo tenía unos 25, un poco tarde para la mayoría de fotógrafos, creo. Unos 10 años después, a los 36, me convertí en lo que podríamos llamar “yo mismo”, se “disparó”. Fue tras sufrir episodios de depresión. Empecé a expresar mi yo interior a través de mi obra.

H74 - Tus fotos me transmiten un gran número de sensaciones diferentes, pero, ¿en qué lugares o momentos te sientes más cómodo para tomar fotografías? ¿Qué intentas transmitir con tus obras?

HC - Donde más cómodo me siento es en lugares olvidados, los lugares que pasan desapercibidos. Y donde menos cómodo me siento es en un jardín en flor, ja ja.

H74 - Patrol, The Temptation of Gravity, The Pilot… He visto estas obras, algunas de las más interesantes, sencillas y hermosas imágenes que he contemplado, y no puedo evitar pensar, ¿te consideras un fotógrafo afortunado o paciente? En otras palabras, ¿crees que la fotografías es más una cuestión de estar en el lugar adecuado en el momento preciso o más una cuestión de perseverancia? ¿Mitad y mitad?

HC - Diría que tan sólo de ser consciente. Sabes lo que está pasando a tu alrededor y lo adaptas, disparo al instante, sin trípode.

H74 - En un primer momento pensaba preguntarte sobre tu inspiración, tus influencias y los fotógrafos que admiras. En este caso… ¿te gustaría compartir con nosotros las obras que de algún modo te han “marcado”? Recomiéndanos 5 fotógrafos y 5 obras, y cuéntanos por qué (lo sé, parece uno de esos cuestionarios…)

HC - Mi mayor influencia viene probablemente del mundo de la fotomanipulación, un amigo llamado Damnengine o simplemente Dennis. Su obra me ha llegado mucho más que la de cualquier otro. Aunque somos muy diferentes en cuanto a creación y estilo, su trabajo me ha tocado la fibra. En cuanto a fotógrafos, para ser sincero no conozco demasiados, no tengo un profundo conocimiento de arte por no haber tenido educación artística y esas cosas.

H74 - Como tú, soy un gran amante del blanco y negro, y me gustaría conocer tu punto de vista. ¿Por qué fotografía en blanco y negro y no en color?

HC - Para mí elimina las capas de lo superfluo. Muestra mejor el centro del sentido de la imagen. Simplemente estoy enamorado de él.

H74 - ¿Y en cuanto a la Holga?

HC - Adoro ese pequeño objeto. Pone el balón en marcha.

H74 - Como un total principiante en fotografía, la primera vez que ví tus obras me sentí de algún modo conmocionado, y sentí la imperiosa necesidad de aprender y mejorar en mis obras. Si alguien te pidiera consejo, ¿cuál sería?

HC - Sé tu mismo, deja que el lado creativo tome el control. Para mí no es algo técnico.

H74 - ¿Qué sitúas en un primer lugar? ¿Conocimiento, habilidad, saber lo que quieres?

HC - Diría que el equipo iría al final, en mi opinión lo más importante es tener una visión de lo que quieres mostrar, especialmente con las fotomanipulaciones.

H74 - Una cosa más que realmente me gustaría saber sobre tu obra son las fotomanipulaciones, precisamente porque no parecen manipuladas, como Thinking of Living You o Not All Birds Can Sing, tan potentes y llenas de emociones. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre ellas?

HC - Aspectos muy emotivos. Leaving you trata sobre intentar deshacerte de las cosas que pueden entristecerte, al menos para mí. Está hecha con una imagen que tomé con mi Holga como fondo. El resto, excepto la cabeza, está escaneado en objetos que encuentro, como las alas, que son parte de una taza de café con trozos de cristal sobre ellas. Soy un gran coleccionista de desechos, mi casa se está llenando.

H74 - Para terminar, ¿algún proyecto en mente? ¿Exposiciones?

HC - He comenzado una nueva serie de obras llamada “boxwood productions”, trabajando con objetos que he encontrado y ordenándolos para contar una historia. Debo decir que es probablemente el proyecto más apasionante en el que me he embarcado, tan sólo está en fase de desarrollo pero tiene buena pinta.

H74 - Bien, para decirte la verdad ha sido mi primera vez entrevistando a alguien, ha sido un placer y me gustaría darte las gracias por tomarte la molestia de hacerlo. ¿Tienes una Holga de sobra que no necesites? … (tenía que intentarlo, no me tomes en serio…)

HC - Gracias por interesarte en mis obras, el placer ha sido mío y sí, puede que tenga una Holga de sobra en el establo, dispara tu dirección de correo  Nos vemos en el campo de batalla del arte (risas)…

One of the things I always appreciated in photography were black and white, originality, an anxious mind and a great ability to transmit through images feelings quite unknown and occult. Then I knew about the work of Heavycoat (Craig Corbin) and felt fascinated. So Angel knew about him too and asked me to interview him for Xocolat.
It’s my first time doing something similar and I have to admit I really enjoyed, most of all because in lots of aspects I felt so identified with Craig. Hope you like that interview of a visual “magician” of the medium format.

H74 - Well, here we go with the classic trivia question in this kind of things. We know you as Heavycoat from DeviantART but… who’s the real man behind the nick? You know, Your name, where do you live and what do you do for living…All that kind of things, talk us a little about yourself…

HC -My real name’s Craig Corbin live in a small forgotten about town named Lyons, Ga. not sure even if its on The map, lol. By day am a personal trainer (buys The film).

H74 - Heavycoat… by taking a look at your works seems like something closely related to the ambiences, contrasts and subjects in your photographs, your style… I’m sure this name has a story too…

HC - My style is, hmm that’s hard. I try to evoke a little of me in everything I do and I hope it is displayed. Part analogue part digital the rest I leave to my emotions. I guess others probably could speak on this better then me, I guess it just happens :).

H74 - One more obvious question in this kind of interviews. How and when you discovered and felt interested in photography? How and when you knew you wanted to be photographer? Self –taught? Academy?

HC - My dad brought me a camera, when I was about 25 sorta late for most photographers I guess. Then about 10 years later at 36 I became what I would call my own, it just clicked. It was then after suffering bouts of depression I began to express my inner self through my work.

H74 - Your photographs produce me a high amount of mixed feelings but in which places or moments you feel more confortable when taking photographs? What do you want to transmit with your works?

HC - I feel most comfortable in forgotten about places, the places that most overlook. I feel the most uncomfortable in a blooming flower garden, ha ha.

H74 - Patrol, The temptation of gravity, The pilot… I saw this works, one of The most interesting, simple and beautiful images I had seen, and couldn’t help but thinking… You consider yourself a lucky or a patient photographer? In other words, you think photography is more a matter of being in the right place in the right moment? A matter of perseverance? Fifty-fifty?

HC - I would say just being aware. You know what is going on around you and just adapt, am a hip shooter no tripod’s here.

H74 - In a first moment, I was going to ask you for your inspirations, your influences and photographers you admire, in case of this… Would you like to share with us the works that somehow “marked” you? Recommend us 5 photographs and 5 photographers and why (I know, looks like one of those tags…)

HC - My biggest influence probably comes from the photomanipulation world, a friend named damnengine or simply Dennis. His work struck me more then anyone’s. Although we are very different in creating and style, his stuff just struck a cord with me. As for as photographers to be honest I do not know of that many; my lack of art knowledge is not that in depth having no schooling and stuff.

H74 - As you I am a great lover of The black and white, I’d like to know your point of view, Why black and white in case of colour photography?

HC - To me it just strips away the layers of the unwanted. It showcases the core or meaning of the image more. Am simply in love with it.

H74 - And what about The Holga?

HC - I love that little thing. It starts the ball in motion.

H74 - As a complete beginner in photography, The first time I saw your works I felt somehow shocked, then I felt a great need of learning and improve my works. If somebody asked you for advice what will it be?

HC - To be yourself, to let the creative side take over, for me it’s not a technical thing.

H74 - What do you put in first place? Knowledge, skill, equipment, knowing what you want?

HC - I say equipment will be The last, I guess just having a vision of what you want to reveal especially with The photomanipulation stuff.

H74 - One more thing I really like about your work are your photomanipulations, just because they don’t look manipulated, like Thinking of living you or Not all birds can sing, so powerful and full of emotions. What can you tell me about them?

HC - Strictly emotional stuff. “Leaving you” is about trying to let go of the things that might bring you down, at least for me. It’s made from an image I took with my holga, as the background. The rest except for the head is scanned in objects that I find, like the wings, which are parts of a coffee cup with busted glass over them. Am a big junk collector, my house is filling up.

H74 - Just to finish, any projects in mind? Exhibitions?

HC - Started a new series of works called “boxwood productions”, working with found objects and arranging them to tell a story, I say it’s probably The most exciting project that I have encountered, it’s in it’s developing phase but it feels right.
